BYT, Blogging, and Books

Something I’ve been meaning to do for a while is start a separate page on this site to include blog posts I’ve written that have been posted on other, often larger blogs. I’m currently writing about music for SF Station but while in DC spent time as a food and drink blogger for megasite Brightest Young Things, a clique I got into through DJing.

Last spring BYT had the idea of a food month where we showcase the contents of certain DC locals’ fridges. I started off with a look into vegan and vegetarian activist Amber McDonald’s fridge and learned a lot about tasty veggie treats as well as local CSAs. My second fridge assignment got me a bit more excited as I was to inventory the fridge of Washington Post Food editor Joe Yonan, someone whose work I had followed for years.

After getting over my initial starstruck feelings thanks to Joe’s friendly attitude I learned that he was in the middle of writing a cookbook on cooking for yourself, one person. This was a great idea and something I could definitely relate to as I love cooking but spent my single years only eating Lean Cuisine because I didn’t want to waste the food or bother with groceries going bad. Upon opening Joe’s fridge and freezer and beginning to jot down notes I realized what his recipe making entailed; the fridge was full of concoctions and potions of all kinds, unlabeled, requiring Joe’s taste to correctly identify the contents within. There were a lot of them and it took me over two hours to go through Joe’s fridge with him.

Fast forward a little under a year and Joe is traveling the country on his book tour, supporting his project Serve Yourself: Nightly Adventures in Cooking for One.

I received a Tweet yesterday from my friend Alex who was editor of the BYT food and drink blog when I wrote for it and has since moved to the Boston area for a great new job. She was at the book signing and opened up the book to the first page of the first chapter and Joe actually starts the book off by mentioning my trip to inventory his fridge for BYT. I checked out Amazon who often gives previews of the beginning of books and – lo and behold – they included that page in their preview.

Pretty cool. Thanks for the mention, Joe! Definitely pick up a copy of the book, it’s full of great recipes for not just singles but also couples or even families.

Video Sunday Vol. XIII

Yeah so I missed last week, first time I skipped since January. Oh well, it happens. One of my best childhood friends came out to visit for the week and all my cares seemed to go out the window for a few days. I kinda needed that. I’ll have a great post about all our adventures as well as photos up a little later this week. Now to the videos…

Notorious LA party the Do-Over likes to travel and has been known to hold “-Over” events in places like Miami, Hawaii, and now Palm Springs. Check out this video they put together of their great “Sleep-Over” event held last month in Palm Springs.

When an artist makes a big splash at SXSW, they tend to do the same to the music industry in general during the coming year. This year everyone seemed to be sharing the same praises of Erykah Badu and how amazing her sets and music were during the festival. This is a great little video of her singing in a studio, reminding us how amazing her voice really is and that a comeback is not such a farfetched idea.

UK rapper Smasher does just that and crushes this remix of the A Milli beat on a fast flowing freestyle with killer production from BlinkieUK.

When rock remixes of hip hop tracks are dropped it seems like they are either really good or really bad. Cris Cab takes on Kanye’s “All of the Lights” and it comes out shining like gold in a beautiful new vibe.

I’ve been loving the new TV on the Radio so of course I had to post their new video.

Keep an eye on my Tumblr for more timely video postings every couple days.

Interview with Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation

I was pretty psyched to have the opportunity to interview Rob Garza, one half of DC’s own Thievery Corporation. Their ESL Music label was branching out and starting to hold events in the bay area and it was a great chance to talk to someone who has the same DC roots as me about my new home in SF. Little did I know, Rob also moved to SF about a year ago from DC to immerse himself in the music and art culture that thrives in SF and takes a backseat to politics in DC. We had a great convo and I’m really looking forward to meeting him at the show this weekend. Catch him along with ESL Music’s Ancient Astronauts and SF’s Afrolicious at Public Works tomorrow night.

Check out the entire interview up on SF Station Pulse at this link.

Video Sunday Vol. XII

Spring is on it’s way!

Mobroder is a bit of a mystery at the moment but collaborators Blu Jemz, HOFF, and Spank Rock have never disappointed before. Imagine Miami in the 80s and you’ll understand. This is just the start with “Rush (Nile Delta Remix)”, can’t wait to see what else is coming especially with this cast of characters: Amanda Blank, Maluca, Hussle Club, Da Hardy Boys, Gumshoe, Eli Escobar, Posso, and Roxy Cottontail.

Gotta love the new Lil’ B video for his track “Illusions of Grandeur” featuring the beautiful voice of Imogen Heap. Makes me wonder if he knows it’s really “delusions of grandeur.”

Jamie King (doesn’t he know that’s the least Google-able name ever?) gets grime king Sway on “This is the Life,” a house track featuring a pretty rad split-screen video. This song should be hot for the summertime.

Pretty sick song produced by Kraddy showcasing the talents of the Thrasher team in SF’s Double Rock skate park.

One of my favorite artists of last year and to watch for this year Aloe Blacc put out a video for his classic-sounding song, “Loving You Is Killing Me.” Gotta love watching a lil’ talented kid breakdance!

Video Sunday Vol. XI

A Wednesday edition of Video Sunday. Internet was out all last week/wkend so it’s nice to finally be connected again.

This great Adidas Is All In video features athletes from all kinds of sports rocking Adidas gear and generally winning. Gotta love that it’s accompanied by the song “Civilization” off Justice’s upcoming album.

This hilarious “How to Do a Graffiti Masterpiece” video from Zonk Vision.

The Kid Daytona has definitely been under my radar but that has definitely changed with this party-filled video of his hot indie meets west coast hip hop tune “Take Aim” featuring Freddie Gibbs and Alex of the Kickdrums.

Big Sean pays homage to Detroit with the appropriately titled “Hometown,” sampling Adele‘s “Hometown Glory” with great footage of the city as well as one of his live shows.

A sexy, NSFW video for hot indie group The Weeknd‘s song “What You Need.” Just watch it, it’s definitely what everyone needs.

The fun video for “Feathers” by Swiss rock band Labrador City features views of their country in springtime that make me really wish I was there.

RIP Nate Dogg

One of the best to ever sing a hook and really make a track with his silky flow, Nate Dogg left us way too early yesterday at the age of 41 after battling health problems for a few years.

This mix, created in 2008 by DJ Steve1der, is a great reminder of just how deep Nate Dogg’s catalogue is. He will be greatly missed. RIP Nate Dogg.
